Microphone placement is the skill that separates recordings that sound like they were made in a bedroom from recordings that sound like they were made in a studio. It costs nothing to learn and nothing to implement. It requires no additional gear. And it has more impact on the quality of your recordings than the microphone itself in most situations.
Professional engineers spend years developing placement instincts. This guide compresses the most important principles into a framework you can apply immediately.
The Fundamental Principle
Before any specific placement technique, understand the governing principle behind all of them: a microphone captures everything within its polar pattern at its position. The character of what it captures is determined by distance, angle, and the acoustic environment at that position.
Change any one of these three variables and you change the recording. Change all three systematically and you have complete creative control over how any source sounds on tape. The goal of microphone placement is to find the position where the instrument sounds best to that specific microphone — which may be different from where it sounds best to the human ear standing in the room.
Recording Electric Guitar Amplifiers
The electric guitar amplifier is the most commonly recorded source in rock and roll history and the subject of more microphone placement experimentation than any other instrument. The principles that have emerged from decades of professional practice are well-established.
The microphone: A dynamic microphone is almost always the first choice for close-micing a guitar amplifier. The Shure SM57 is the industry standard for guitar amp recording and appears on more professional recordings than any other microphone in the application. Its presence boost suits the midrange character of a guitar amp and its cardioid pattern provides good rejection of room reflections at close distances. It handles high sound pressure levels without distorting.
On-axis vs off-axis positioning: An SM57 pointed directly at the center of the speaker cone — on-axis — produces the brightest, most present, most aggressive tone. Moving the microphone toward the edge of the speaker cone — off-axis — progressively softens the high-frequency response and thickens the midrange. Most experienced engineers find a position somewhere between the center and the edge of the cone, adjusted to taste for each guitar and amp combination.
Distance: Closer mic placement increases the proximity effect — a bass boost inherent to cardioid microphones at close range — and reduces room sound. Moving the microphone back from the grille introduces more room ambience and softens the tone. One to three inches from the grille cloth is the standard starting position for a close mic.
The second microphone: Many professional guitar recordings use two microphones simultaneously — a close mic for definition and attack and a room mic positioned several feet back for ambience and depth. The room mic is blended into the close mic signal to taste, adding a sense of space that close micing alone cannot produce. Phase alignment between the two microphones is critical — if the two signals are out of phase they will cancel frequencies and produce a thin, hollow sound. The polarity switch on your preamp or interface corrects this.
Cabinet position: The speaker cabinet's position in the room changes its sound as dramatically as microphone placement does. A cabinet on the floor picks up additional low-frequency energy from floor reflections. A cabinet elevated off the floor sounds tighter and more defined. A cabinet in a corner accumulates bass from both adjacent walls. Record your amplifier in multiple positions before settling on the one that best suits the song.
Recording Acoustic Guitar
The acoustic guitar is one of the most challenging instruments to record well because its sound radiates from multiple sources simultaneously — the soundhole projects bass-heavy sound while the body resonates broadly and the neck and headstock contribute their own tonal character. No single microphone position captures all of these sources equally.
The soundhole myth: Beginning recordists frequently place their microphone directly in front of the soundhole because it seems logical — that is where the guitar is loudest. Recording directly into the soundhole produces a boomy, imbalanced, bass-heavy recording with poor definition and an unnatural tonal character. The soundhole projects the fundamental bass frequencies in a way that overwhelms the full frequency range of the instrument at close proximity.
The standard starting position: Point the microphone at the 12th fret from a distance of six to twelve inches. This position captures a balanced representation of the guitar's full frequency range — enough body without the soundhole boom, enough string definition without the harsh attack of close-placed picks against strings. Adjust the angle slightly toward the body for more warmth or slightly toward the neck for more definition.
Stereo recording: Two microphones capture the acoustic guitar's stereo spread more realistically than a single microphone can. The most common stereo technique for acoustic guitar is XY coincident stereo — two cardioid microphones positioned with their capsules as close together as possible, angled outward at 90 degrees to each other. One microphone points toward the neck, one toward the body. The result is a natural, focused stereo image with minimal phase issues.
Room distance: Acoustic guitar benefits from some room contribution more than most instruments. A microphone three to six feet from the guitar captures room ambience that adds a natural sense of space without the reverb artifacts of a digital reverb plugin. This only works in a room with decent acoustics — in an untreated room, distant micing picks up flutter echo and room modes along with the instrument.
Recording Vocals
Vocal recording is where microphone placement decisions have the most obvious impact on the finished recording and the most variables to manage simultaneously.
Distance and proximity effect: Cardioid microphones exhibit proximity effect — an increase in bass response as the microphone gets closer to the source. For vocalists with naturally thin voices, recording close — six to eight inches — adds warmth and body. For vocalists with naturally thick or boomy low-end in their voice, recording slightly farther back — ten to fourteen inches — reduces the proximity bass boost and produces a cleaner representation of the voice's natural character.
Angle: Pointing the microphone directly at the mouth produces the fullest, most present tone. Angling the microphone slightly downward — aimed at the chin rather than the lips — reduces plosive energy without significantly changing the tonal character. This is an alternative to a pop filter for experienced vocalists who can manage plosives through technique.
Pop filter placement: A pop filter should be positioned two to four inches in front of the microphone capsule with the vocalist singing two to four inches in front of the pop filter — creating a total distance of four to eight inches between the vocalist's mouth and the microphone. This distance provides adequate proximity effect while managing plosives effectively.
Reflection management: The microphone's cardioid rear rejection only helps if there is nothing directly behind the vocalist reflecting sound back into the microphone. A bare wall three feet behind the vocalist creates a reflection that arrives at the microphone only a few milliseconds after the direct vocal signal — enough to cause a comb filtering effect that no EQ can fully correct. A portable reflection filter mounted behind the microphone addresses this. Alternatively, position the vocalist so their back faces a treated wall, an open doorway, or soft furnishings that absorb rather than reflect.
Recording Bass Guitar
Bass guitar is recorded differently than other guitars in almost every professional studio. The standard approach combines a direct signal — the bass plugged directly into the interface through a DI box — with an amplifier signal captured by a microphone. The two signals are blended to combine the definition and transient clarity of the direct signal with the tone and character of the amplified signal.
DI recording: A passive or active DI box converts the bass's unbalanced high-impedance output to a balanced low-impedance signal suitable for an XLR input on your interface. The direct signal captures every nuance of the performance with maximum clarity and no room acoustics involved. This signal forms the foundation of the bass sound in most rock and pop productions.
Amplifier micing: A large-diaphragm dynamic microphone — the Sennheiser MD421 and the AKG D112 are the professional standards — is placed close to the bass cabinet speaker cone, typically slightly off-axis to reduce the harshest low-midrange frequencies. The amp signal adds warmth, harmonic complexity, and the physical weight that a direct signal alone sometimes lacks.
Phase alignment: When combining direct and amplifier signals, phase alignment is critical. The microphone signal is delayed relative to the direct signal by the time it takes sound to travel from the speaker to the microphone. This delay — even at one inch of distance, approximately 0.07 milliseconds — can cause phase cancellation that removes low-frequency energy from the combined signal. Use your DAW's sample delay plugin to time-align the two signals by zooming into the waveform and aligning the transients visually.
The Most Important Rule
There are no rules. Every principle in this guide is a starting point derived from what has worked consistently across many sessions with many instruments in many rooms. Your instrument, your room, your microphone, and the sound you are trying to achieve are all specific to you.
The professional approach to microphone placement is not to memorize positions and apply them mechanically. It is to understand the principles well enough to know what to change when something doesn't sound right — closer for more weight and intimacy, farther for more air and room, toward the center for brightness, toward the edge for warmth, on-axis for presence, off-axis for smoothness.
Listen critically to what the microphone is capturing. Move it. Listen again. The ear is the only tool that matters in the end.
