6 PA System Mistakes That Kill Your Live Sound Fast

Bad live sound is memorable in the worst way. The audience might not be able to tell you what is wrong — they just know something is — and they disengage in ways that have nothing to do with the quality of the music. Most of the time the problem traces back to one of six specific mistakes that show up at independent musician gigs constantly.

None of these require expensive gear to fix. Most of them require a process change and about thirty extra minutes at soundcheck.

Mistake One: Skipping Gain Structure at Soundcheck

Gain structure is the foundation of live sound and the step most people either rush through or skip entirely. Every channel on the mixer needs its input gain set correctly before anything else happens — EQ, compression, effects, monitor levels. None of those adjustments mean anything if the input gain is wrong.

Set gain by bringing each input to performance level, then raising the channel gain until the meter reads consistently in the green with peaks occasionally hitting yellow. Never red. Do every channel this way before you touch a fader. A mixer that is properly gain-staged sounds controlled and clean at any volume. One that is not sounds harsh and compressed regardless of what else you do to it.

Mistake Two: Vocals Buried in the Mix

Vocals carry the song. When the audience cannot hear the words clearly they stop following along, and when they stop following along they stop caring. This seems obvious and yet it is the most common live sound problem at independent gigs.

The fix is not just turning the vocal channel up. It is making space for the vocals in the frequency range where they live — roughly 1kHz to 4kHz — by cutting competing instruments in that same range. A small cut on the guitars and keys in the 2kHz to 3kHz range opens up vocal presence without the vocals sounding like they got louder.

Mistake Three: Running Monitors Through the Mains

Stage monitors and front-of-house speakers serve different purposes and need separate mixes. Running the same signal to both — which happens when a musician sends their monitor feed through the main speakers to hear themselves — creates phase issues, feedback risk, and a front-of-house mix that sounds like what the band needs to hear rather than what the audience needs to hear. These are always different things.

Use the aux sends on your mixer to create a separate monitor mix for the stage. Even a basic monitor wedge mix that is different from the mains makes a significant difference in both the stage experience and what the audience hears.

Mistake Four: Feedback That Nobody Addresses

Feedback during a performance is not just annoying — it is a sign that something in the system is gain-staged incorrectly or that a microphone is positioned in a feedback zone. The common responses are to turn the offending channel down and move on, which works as a quick fix but does not address the underlying problem.

Feedback happens when a microphone picks up its own amplified signal and sends it back through the system in a loop. The permanent fix is either repositioning the microphone out of the speaker coverage area, reducing the gain on the offending channel to below the feedback threshold, or using a narrow EQ cut at the feedback frequency.

Mistake Five: No Low End Management

In small venues without acoustic treatment, low frequencies build up and become muddy fast. Every channel that does not need low end should have a high-pass filter applied. Vocals, acoustic guitar, keyboards — none of them need significant content below 100Hz in a live mix. Removing that content cleans up the low end and gives the kick drum and bass room to be heard clearly rather than fighting against a wall of low-frequency competition.

Mistake Six: Wrong Speaker Placement

Main speakers positioned behind the microphones point directly at them and create an immediate feedback loop waiting to happen. Mains should be positioned in front of the microphone line, aimed at the audience. Monitor wedges should be positioned so the microphone is aimed toward the null point of the monitor's pickup pattern — typically the side — which reduces how much of the monitor signal the microphone picks up.

Speaker height matters too. Mains on stands aimed slightly downward toward the audience cover the room more evenly than mains sitting on the floor pointed straight ahead at head height.
