Slide guitar — also called bottleneck guitar — is one of the most expressive and most immediately recognizable sounds in American music. From Robert Johnson's Delta blues recordings to Duane Allman's psychedelic southern rock to Derek Trucks's transcendent contemporary playing, the slide gives the guitar a vocal quality that standard fretting technique cannot replicate.









What Slide Guitar Is and How It Works

Slide guitar places a glass, metal, or ceramic tube — the slide — on one of the guitarist's fretting hand fingers. Instead of pressing strings to frets to produce specific pitches, the slide is held lightly against the strings directly above a fret — not behind it as in standard technique — and moved along the neck to change pitch continuously.

The continuous pitch change is what gives slide guitar its vocal, singing quality — the slide can approach a target pitch from below and resolve onto it, exactly as a singer does, creating an expressive swooping motion that standard fretting cannot produce. The space between notes — the glissando and portamento between pitches — is as musically important as the target pitches themselves.









Slide Materials and Their Tonal Characteristics

Glass slides — made from wine bottle glass in early acoustic blues playing — produce a smooth, warm, slightly dark tone with a relatively gentle attack. Modern glass slides maintain this characteristic and are preferred for warmer, more vocal tonal qualities. Their disadvantage is fragility — glass slides break when dropped.

Metal slides — brass, steel, or chrome — produce a brighter, more cutting tone with more high-frequency presence than glass. They are more durable and available in a wider range of wall thicknesses that affect their tone and weight. A heavier slide maintains momentum along the string better but requires more finger strength. A lighter slide is more agile but can be difficult to control at slow speeds.

Ceramic slides are less common but produce a tone that some players describe as warmer than glass but with more definition than metal — a middle ground that suits certain playing styles and acoustic contexts.









Open Tunings: The Foundation of Slide Playing

While slide guitar can be played in standard tuning, the most expressive and most historically traditional approach uses open tunings — tunings where the open strings form a major chord.

Open G tuning — D, G, D, G, B, D from low to high — was Robert Johnson's tuning and is one of the most used open tunings in Delta blues and rock slide playing. The open strings form a G major chord. Placing the slide across all strings at any fret position produces a major chord in the key of that fret. The 12th fret produces a G major chord an octave above the open strings.

Open E tuning — E, B, E, G#, B, E from low to high — is Duane Allman's primary tuning and the standard for southern rock slide playing. It produces the same relationship between strings as open G but in the key of E, which benefits from the resonance of open E string drone. The increased tension from the higher tuning produces a slightly brighter, more cutting tone.

Open D tuning — D, A, D, F#, A, D from low to high — is identical in string relationship to open G but a whole step lower. It suits acoustic slide playing where the lower tuning produces a deeper, more resonant character.

Technique: The Elements That Separate Good Slide Playing From Great

The most fundamental technical principle in slide guitar is that the slide must be placed directly above the fret wire — not behind it as in standard fretting — to produce the correct pitch. Beginners consistently place the slide behind the fret and produce flat notes. The visual and tactile feedback that corrects standard fretting — the string pressing against the fret wire — is absent in slide playing and must be replaced by ear-trained pitch accuracy.

Muting is the second most critical technique. The slide contacts all strings simultaneously — when the guitarist is playing a single-string melody, the other strings sound sympathetically and create pitch content that conflicts with the melody. The fretting hand fingers trailing behind the slide contact the strings and mute them. The picking hand palm rests lightly across the strings behind the slide to mute the rearward strings. Both muting approaches must be coordinated simultaneously while maintaining the slide's position and control.

Vibrato distinguishes expressive slide playing from merely accurate slide playing. Moving the slide slightly back and forth around the target pitch — quickly enough to create a cyclic pitch variation — mimics the natural vibrato of the human voice and adds the singing quality that makes great slide playing emotionally affecting.
