You spent good money on pedals. You researched them. You watched the demos. You bought the right ones. And your tone still sounds like something is wrong with it — a little muddy, a little thin, a little off in a way you cannot quite identify.
The pedals are probably not the problem. The pedalboard setup around them probably is. These are the four things that kill tone in pedalboards that have perfectly good individual pedals in them.
Once you fix these, you can focus on filling the remaining gaps with quality pedals from Reverb without wondering whether the board itself is working against you.
Problem One: Wrong Signal Chain Order
The order pedals run in changes the sound significantly. The standard chain is tuner, then dynamics and filters like wah and compressor, then gain pedals like overdrive and distortion, then modulation like chorus and phaser, then time-based effects like delay and reverb.
Running distortion after delay, or wah after overdrive, does not just sound different — it often sounds bad. The signal math does not work the same way. Putting a wah after a distortion creates a harsh, nasal sound instead of the responsive sweep you expect. Check the order first before you blame the pedals.
Problem Two: A Bad Power Supply
A daisy chain power cable running multiple pedals from one power source introduces ground loops and electrical noise into the signal. If you hear a hum or buzz that appears when you turn on certain pedals or combinations of pedals, this is almost certainly the cause.

Problem Three: Cheap Patch Cables
The cable between pedals carries signal just like the cable between your guitar and the board does. A bad patch cable introduces noise, cuts high frequencies, and can cause intermittent connection issues that are maddening to troubleshoot live. Lava Cable and George L's are the two patch cable systems worth using. They cost more than the box of cheap patch cables from the music store and they are worth every dollar of the difference.
Problem Four: Too Many True Bypass Pedals in a Row
True bypass sounds like the right choice because it means the pedal does not color your tone when it is off. The problem is that a long chain of true bypass pedals, all switched off, creates a long passive cable run that bleeds high frequencies. The longer the cable run, the more top end you lose.
The fix is a buffer — either a dedicated buffer pedal at the start of the chain, or simply keeping one always-on buffered pedal like a Boss tuner at the front of the board. Boss pedals use a buffered bypass that maintains signal integrity across long chains. One buffered pedal at the start solves the problem without any additional cost.
Fix These First
In order of priority: chain order, power supply, patch cables, buffer. Most boards that sound wrong have at least one of these working against them. Fix the order and the power supply first — those two changes alone will likely transform how the board sounds before you spend another dollar on new pedals.
