The HS5 Specifications

The HS5 is a two-way bi-amplified monitor — a separate amplifier for the 5-inch woofer and the 1-inch tweeter — rated at 54 watts total output. The frequency response is 54Hz–30kHz, which means the HS5 does not reproduce sub-bass below 54Hz. This limitation is significant and discussed in detail below.

The cabinet is a bass reflex design with a rear port. Room control and high-trim response switches on the rear panel allow compensation for placement near walls — +0/−2/−4dB at low frequencies and +0/+2/−2dB at high frequencies — which meaningfully improves accuracy when ideal free-field placement is not possible.

The Sub-Bass Limitation and How to Handle It

The HS5's 54Hz low-frequency limit means you cannot hear the lowest octave of bass on these monitors. Kick drum sub frequencies, bass guitar fundamentals below the second fret of the low E string, and any intentional sub content in electronic music are not represented.

Professional engineers who use HS5s handle this in one of two ways: they add a subwoofer — Yamaha makes the HS8S specifically to complement the HS series — or they reference their mix on multiple playback systems including earbuds and car speakers to check low-end translation.

For music that does not rely heavily on sub-bass — folk, acoustic, rock, country, podcast, voiceover, most indie genres — the HS5 covers the necessary frequency range completely. For hip-hop, trap, EDM, or any music where sub-bass is compositionally significant, the HS8 with its 8-inch woofer and 38Hz low-frequency extension is a better starting point.








Placement and Room Treatment

The HS5 is ruthlessly honest — which means it exposes room problems as clearly as it exposes mix problems. In an untreated room, low-frequency buildup at room boundaries creates peaks and nulls in the bass response that make mixing decisions unreliable. Acoustic treatment — specifically bass traps in corners and broadband absorption at first reflection points — is as important as the monitors themselves for accurate mixing.

Minimum recommended placement: positioned at ear height at the points of an equilateral triangle with your listening position, angled inward approximately 30 degrees, pulled at least 12 inches from the rear wall.








The Bottom Line

The Yamaha HS5 is not a monitor that makes your music sound good. It is a monitor that shows you what your music actually sounds like so you can make it better. That distinction is the entire point of a studio monitor, and the HS5 executes it as well as anything available at twice the price.

If your room is treated and your music doesn't rely on sub-bass content, the HS5 is one of the best mixing decisions you can make at this price point.
