Mastering is the final stage of audio production before distribution. It is the process of applying subtle processing to the finished stereo mix that optimizes it for the playback systems and distribution formats where it will be heard. What Mastering Actually Does

Dynamic control applies compression and limiting to the stereo mix to increase its perceived loudness and reduce its peak-to-average ratio. Streaming platforms normalize loudness — applying a gain offset to bring all tracks to a common playback level — which limits the effectiveness of heavy limiting for loudness competition. Modern mastering targets approximately -14 LUFS integrated for streaming while preserving enough dynamic range that the music doesn't sound crushed.
Stereo enhancement improves the stereo width and depth of the mix through mid-side processing — adjusting the balance between the center and sides of the stereo image independently. This can widen a mix that sounds narrow on stereo speakers or focus a mix that sounds diffuse.
Format preparation ensures the master file meets the technical specifications of the distribution format — 16-bit 44.1kHz for streaming and CD, 24-bit 48kHz for video, specific loudness targets for broadcast.
The Things Required for Home Mastering
Mastering your own music at home requires monitoring equipment that reveals the tonal, dynamic, and stereo characteristics of your mix accurately, and processing tools that allow precise control over each mastering stage.
For monitoring, the most accessible professional approach is combining a pair of accurate studio monitors — the Yamaha HS5 or KRK Rokit 5 — with a reliable pair of reference headphones — the Sennheiser HD600 or the Beyerdynamic DT 880 Pro — and cross-referencing your mastering decisions on multiple playback systems including earbuds and car speakers.
For processing, the iZotope Ozone suite — discussed in detail in Blog 10 — provides a comprehensive mastering chain in a single plugin with AI-assisted starting points. The Mastering Workflow: Step by Step

Step one: Reference listening. Before touching any processing, listen to the mix three times — once on studio monitors, once on headphones, once on small speakers or earbuds. Take notes on what you hear — too bright, low end imbalanced, stereo image too narrow — and address each observation specifically.
Step two: High-pass filter. Remove sub-bass energy below 30Hz to 40Hz that adds no musical content and reduces headroom. This is not a tonal decision — it is cleanup below the audible range.
Step three: EQ correction. Address any frequency imbalances identified in the reference listening. Use a linear-phase EQ for transparent processing on the stereo mix. Make cuts before boosts and make them narrower than you think necessary — mastering EQ operates on the complete mix and any change affects every element simultaneously.
Step four: Compression. Apply light compression at a 2:1 to 4:1 ratio with a slow attack and slow release — enough to add cohesion and increase the mix's average level without audible gain reduction artifacts. A 1 to 3dB gain reduction reading on the meter is the typical mastering compression range.
Step five: Limiting. A transparent brickwall limiter prevents digital clipping while maximizing the average level. Set the ceiling at -1.0dBTP — true peak, not sample peak — to prevent intersample clipping that occurs in certain playback contexts. Set the threshold to achieve your target loudness — approximately -14 LUFS integrated for streaming.
Step six: Reference comparison. Compare your master against commercially released tracks in the same genre and at a matched loudness level. The calibrated comparison — matching perceived loudness before comparing — prevents the louder option from always sounding better and gives an accurate assessment of tonal and dynamic quality.
